E430 - steering wheel button removal

I just bought a 2002 E430 and someone had the bright idea of painting the control switches on the steering wheel to cover the wear. I don't know what they painted it with but it seems to be some kind of latex. The "paint" is very soft and tacky and rolls off (with difficulty). About half of the "paint" is gone and I would lke to remove it entirely. To do this, I would like to remove the rocker switch knobs and take them inside to clean them throughly. I *suspect* that they just pop off with the correct amount of pressure but I would hate to break something because of an incorrect guess.

Does anyone know how to remove these things without breaking them?
