clearcoat problems 300SD
my 83 300SD has been repainted except for the top quarter of each door. Where the styling crese is. Above that on all sides there are spots of clear coat that appear to be missing, and on one side it seems to be missing entirely. When i tried waxing it it made it turn to a white color, and not even a brush with a household cleaner could get it back to being brown. Time got it back to brown, then i used a polish. Just made it white again. Waited for it to get back to brown, and then used a polishing compound, and that made it worse of all. Do I have any other options other then repaint?

You might try a color sand (aka wet sand) with a 2500 or 2000 grit sandpaper. It can't really hurt if your only other option is repaint...unless your paint is getting really thin. Some people say that a good and careful color sanding can even improve some new factory paint jobs.
Meguiar's Online has a good tutorial on doing this, including streaming video if you have a fast connection. Good luck - and take pictures (or digital pics) if you have the ability to scan and upload 'em! - Nathan '83 240D "Steiner" '00 New Beetle TDI |
