2 steps forward, 1 back
Guido,
Congrats! Satisfying, isn't it? Will be anxious to see pics. Johnson, Whereabouts in MO are you? Got a bro-in-law in KC. I think for me, at least, doing that final wax before winter is sort of the automotive equivalent of harvest time -- getting ready for a long, cold winter. I myself was patting myself on the back for a great shine, and decided to remove my antenna mast to try to polish out some discolored areas. I was loosening the chrome ferrule on top of the antenna and it broke off! I'll try to carefully glue it back on for now rather than spend the $216 for a new antenna right now.

Looks good ! Now your only problem is figuring out what to do with the money you save on professional detailing . . .

400E,
I am in St. Louis, MO. Drop me an email if your in the area. With your antenna, I had the same thing happen to me a while back on my 190. If the glue doesnt work, there is a way to fix it without buying a new assembly. Its difficult to explain in a words, but you would remove whole motor from the car, then use various methods to get the antenna mask out of the motor, I used cutters and pryed the assembly apart at the points using a flat screwdriver. Then after the mask is gone, you are left with the antenna motor and the shaft with the threads and the broken peice of chrome stuck in it, you would use a flat screwdriver or something of the size, insert it hard, then twist and the peice comes out, buy a new antenna mask and reverse the order to install. It took me almost 2 hours of playing around with it from getting it out of the car to the very end. The winters in the midwest are soo hard on cars I think, actually its harder for the owners, I gotta change the oil in all the cars before it gets cold now, I do my own oil changes and trust me, its no fun being in a 20-30 degree garage messing around with it, lol. |

Guido,
I'll definitely take you up on that! Thanks! I envy you your expertise in really understanding these great cars. Every time I learn a little something about the mechanical systems of my car, I am in awe of the thought and hard work that went into designing them. They are still kind of a mystery to me. I finally got up the nerve last weekend to take off all the "window dressing" on top of the engine so I could finally see the spark plugs! Johnson, Great idea about using a screwdriver to get out the old piece -- I hadn't thought of that. You're right about changing oil in the cold -- not too much fun! I will be doing my pre-winter changeover to Mobil1 5W-30 next weekend. Will let you know if/when I get to your fine town. You do the same if you get up to Omaha! Steve

Well, thanks to a) global warming or 2) normal climatic variation, it was 60 degrees yesterday in Omaha, NE, so I washed my car in my driveway and applied another coat of Z5. Never know what February and March will bring! I had last applied Z2 in early November, so it's been over 2 1/2 months. Water was still beading up on the Zaino side of my trunk, but didn't seem to on the Griot's side, so I'd have to say Zaino does hold up better. This is despite going through an automatic car wash once a week.
I want to hear more about Zaino ZFX as Johnson C. has reported in another post. Sure would be nice to have a product without the long wait time between coats!
