Re-dyed my steering wheel with Leatherique
A couple years ago, trying to preserve the leather of my steering wheel cover, I ended up inadvertantly taking off the finish using Griot's Leather Care (never had any problems with this product on the seats, though).
Over the last couple weekends, I removed the old finish with lacquer thinner, sanded lightly with 400 wet-or-dry (used wet), used Leatherique's prepping product, let dry a day, then applied Leatherique's black dye. (They'll supply in it any degree of gloss you desire -- I ordered absolutely flat/matte.) I put on two coats, looked very nice but was, in fact, quite "flat" in terms of gloss, which is the way new MBs come from the factory but was not how mine had looked. I emailed George at Leatherique and he was very helpful. He recommended a couple thin coats of their product, Klear Kote, which I just finished. Looks very nice! I would say that if I had it all to do over, I would probably just get the dye in a medium gloss.
