Try Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish. Works very well on Chrome. They also sell a chrome polish, but it's really only for chrome that's already clean and shiny.

Does no one use 0000 steel wool anymore?

Yes, I do, but you have to be very certain that what you're using it on is really chrome plated metal, and not "chrome" painted plastic. I regularly use 0000 wool with Flitz to polish the hood star ornament. Nice.

you might try water & Aluminum Foil. crumple the foil and with water work the chrome til bright & then use chrome polish. R L Lepper

I'm not certain about your car, but some of that "chrome" trim might be anodized aluminum. At least some of the trim on the w123 is...window trim, grill trim, badges, rain gutters, etc. It's hard to get that really shiny with off the shelf cleaner/polish/stuff.
