Removing leather covers...

I have recently completely removed the rear sliding seat from my SDL - the blue leather on the seat needs to be reconditioned and the seam had come apart in one place (~6 inches long), which I'd like to repair, so I was wondering if there is a proper method for taking off the leather cover off of the horsehair seat backing.

I see some clips along the sides where the leather is held in place, but I'm not sure if there is a proper order, do's or don'ts when removing them.

I have a photo if it would help -

THanks in advance -
James

The first thing you should do is apply whatever conditioner you’re using to the leather. It is old and very dry likely and you'll be putting some unusual stress to it as you remove it that will go easier if the leather is more pliable. Some products have you applying the product, put the seat in plastic bags and leave it like that in a warm place for a day or two.

Leatherique...

I think I'm going to to order Leatherique kit with Rejuvenating oil, cleaner, dye and crack filler included. Hoping that RO will restore some softness of the skins. They are as hard as cardboard in some places... I hope this product can help - willing to so several applications if it will work.

So I'll take your advice and keep the leather stretched on the seat frame for the application of the Rejuvenating Oil.

Leatherique calls for 'sweating' the leather after conditioning with Rejuvenating Oil (RO)... since I'm leaving the skins on the frame (at least for now) I'll have to condition it and wrap it with some sort of plastic wrap or put a couple of trash bags around it and let it sit for a couple of days like that to relax and absorb the conditioner.... then, given the condition of my seats - I'll probably have to do it again...
