Engine Detailing...
Hey i have this old 1987 300E that my dad gave me, and he did not take care of keeping the engine area clean. So i bought this product saying all you do it spray it with it and let it sit for 10min, but then it says to spray your treated areas with water. Now i know that water can be in the engine but soaking the engine compartment just sounds kinda damaging. So all i need to know is if i can spray it with water and should i cover all the electrical componets, and with what?
Thank You |

Keep engine running.
If you spray water on your engine, you must start the engine, spray with water, and than let the engine run for 10 or 15 minutes. Gary

This topic has been discussed a number of times, but the basic premise is to make sure to protect the electricals from excess water, especially the distributor and spark plug holes where water can pool (depending on engine configurations).
Take note of how MB places components throughout the engine compartment before you begin. Most are located far from the engine to reduce deterioration from heat, but also shielded from rainwater and such. Most components can sustain a bit of water, given that they are designed to reside in hostile temperature extremes, but not designed to take direct hits from concentrated jets of water. As mentioned earlier, do run the engine immediately after. You will be able to do this pretty safely if you don't go at it with a high-pressure hose (like at the car wash bays)...these can characteristically cause water to seep into areas the engine (and its components) won't particularly care for. If you DO manage to drown one or more of the engine management systems, error codes may get thrown at the diagnostic module. Disconnecting the ground lead from the battery for a few minutes will allow the systems to reboot...don't do this unless you already know your radio security code though... ...BTW...don't do this on a HOT engine!!! Unless you like to replace cracked heads and blocks...
