Cleaning rotors

Hi: I have Alcon calipers on my G500. They are "painted" silver. I find them very difficult to clean. Is there any product specific for calipers? Does the finish fade over time?

Careful what you spray on brake components....use something specifically designed to not cause any harm. (meguiars wheel cleaner, p21s, etc)

Given that the calipers are painted, I'd start with the wheel cleaner, a toothbrush, and some patience. Over time MB brake dust will eat paint. You can keep the outside of your wheels as clean as you like, but the inside of the rim just gets coated and eventually the paint damaged. There really isn't a way around it without messing with aftermarket pads. It would stand to reason that your brake calipers paint is suffering the same fate.

If you feel really ambitious, jack up the car (use a jackstand please), remove the wheel, and get to manually cleaning them. Just realize that after all your hard work it may just revert to its previous state in a week, month, etc... Other than that, the only thing I can think of is having your calipers coated with ceramic or something similar. Probably more headache than its worth, but...

Wish I could offer you better news....

Hope this helps,
Lee

There are companies that make brake caliper paint kits (around $50) in a variety of colors (mostly marketed to satisfy the "rice bunch").

The paint is designed to resist the extreme heat that calipers are exposed to, and the thickness of the paint fills in the granular cavities that are prevalent with caliper castings...also the reason why brake dust is well-harbored there.

I have applied the kit on a former vehicle and it held up perfectly for the three years I've owned the car. The rears stayed fairly clean, but fronts did hold a bit of brake dust on the caliper surface...most of which could be removed with wheel cleaner and hosed off.

I plan on doing the W124 calipers next...
