Zebrano dash wood: How to get the finish off?
Hi guys, the zebrawood insert on the left side of my dash flaked off all its varnish from exposure to the sun, so I just put some spar varnish on it. Now all the other pieces look like crap. I don't get why the Merc people did this, take one of the finest-looking exotic hardwoods and mask it with a sixteenth-inch-thick layer of dark amber varnish. The stain makes the entire piece of wood the same color, and the color looks like fake wood. Actually, what it looks like is the stock of a base-model Ruger 10/22 -- like birch stained to look like walnut.
Anyway, now I want the rest of my dash wood to look like real zebrawood too. Anybody know if there's a chemical stripper I can use to get the plastic crap off there? Or am I gonna be stuck wearing my way through that armor plate of varnish with 220-grit (bleah)? Thanks! --Finn

It actually was a clear coat, darkened with age and UV exposure and the red tones bleached out. New they were vivid pieces of wood.
