Brand New Paint Care

Hey everyone!

Finally got my 1991 300E painted and it looks great!
Can anyone give me ideas on what needs to be done to preserve the paint surface?
The vehicle was just picked up yesterday. Do I need to give it some time before waxing? Do I use paint sealant? I am a complete novice to this and would appreciate any advice given.

Thanks in advance!

Recommend talking to the folks that painted your car for advice on how to care for the new paint.

two bucket wash method, grit guards, microfiber wash mits and microfiber towels. Keep the wash mits and towels off the ground.

a foam gun to foam the car for a pre soak is also a good idea too.

There are VERY specific procedures to follow when a car has been painted. Talk to your shop about this!

Paint sealant is a scam.

Appreciate all the responses.
What type of VERY specific care does a new paint job require?

Typically new paint should be allowed to "cure" for a few months before applying any wax or polish. Washing should be frequent with a mild car wash soap to avoid a heavy accumulation of dirt. As mentioned previously discuss this topic with the shop that painted your car. They should be able to tell you the paint manufacturer's specific instructions to care for new paint.

Thanks to all for the responses.
I've talked to the shop and they were very helpful. They also said not to was for 60-90 days and then referred me to Meguiare's products

I would still go ahead and wash the car because otherwise you are allowing pollution and dirt to sink into the paint while it cures (unless you heavily garage the car). If you leave it unwashed, then you will end up having to claybar and polish the car right afterwards which would definitely be more detrimental.

Wash it every 2-3 weeks. First month I would use NO car washing soap. Just water the car down really well and dry it off by hand using MULTIPLE microfiber mits. Just be very gentle. After the first month use Meguiars Gold Class Car Wash, but again use it gently and in a conservative fashion.

Taking a read of this should help with techniques and etiquette:

Car Wash Technique

doc, if you really want to preserve the new paint job buy a Griot's Garage (griotsgarage.com) boar's hair brush and wash bucket. Use Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash with warm water. Dry the car using a backpack blower, followed by a microfiber towel for the few small droplets that remain. I've followed that car wash technique for 12 years and the paint on our MB vehicles still looks wonderful.
