Carpet paint?

Oh yeah, this is the interior restoration thread that dare not speak its name.

Anyone used carpet paint (like that sold by the folks that sell interior restoration kits)?

I need to turn some dark blue carpet into beige. (Not mats, the pieces that run along the sills.)

Thanks

Mac

i have, a color change is a little more difficult than just re dying a carpet.

make sure carpet is free of dust, dirt, anything. its best if removed from car. and ill wash the carpets with a degreaser first and wait for them to dry.

u can go to any detail shop and buy flexible auto dye. or locate a local SEM dealer. (if u cant find one stop at a local car dealer and ask their detailer when the distributor comes, theyre like snap on, they sell to you right off their truck)

once the dye dries out you will want to use a brush to re arrange the carpet( if that makes sense) and re coat several times, this way the dye gets 360 around all of the carpeting.

if u have questions feel free to ask, i used to do this work all the time

i attached a photo of the door panel i re sprayed with sem you will be very happy with the results

What has been said is very good...
but at a lower level I have painted car carpets with Krylon Vinyl spray and it was amazing..
I only used the vacuum on it first...follow directions on the can for shaking time.. as with all spray cans... and spray from a couple of angles... looked great, cheap, lasted a long time... The picture of the interior color just posted... I also had great results from this same vinyl spray...and I know it is not the only brand which works...
As always with these sorts of things... do a practice piece first.. either a spare or use a place which will not show much if it totally screws it up.. like dissolves it...LOL.. I changed out an entire Karman Ghia inside..and it looked great... be sure to learn about and use the concept of ' tack coat' ... this is what makes it possible to apply enough to flow and shine.. without running...
What impressed me most... on the driver's seat ... at the lower bolster .. is about the hardest used spot on any car interior... that is where I could tell how well this paint ' melded into ' the vinyl upholstery.... because after a couple of years it got thinner... NOT FLAKE OFF, NOT CRACK.... gradually wore thinner in coverage... I spot repaired it and it lasted years longer looking perfect....
I wiped down the upholstery with alcohol , roughed up the surface with 100 grit FLiNT sandpaper, wiped it again... let dry, then sprayed.....

I found that 3M General Purpose Adheasive Remover is an excellent surface prep for vinyl when using these "dyes". I have color changed entire vinyl dash, overhead, console, etc. on a couple of my BlueBird motorhomes and it was extremely durable when finished.

As far as carpet, as others have said the key is getting it clean first, and then getting it into as many angles of the nap as possible. The SEM can specifies that it is not designed for a color change on carpets, probably because it is so difficult to get the fibers completely covered without saturating it and making it stiff.

Buy a can, try a scrap piece of carpet, see how you like it.

everytime ive sprayed a carpet. its become saturated and became stiff. just when youre done, get a scrub brush and that will losen it up again. sometimes the frustration isnt worth as much as going to buy 80/20 loop carpeting and cutting it yourself to fit. at 10 bucks a can by 3-4 cans that could be 40 dollars toward new carpeting
