Price range on used seats?

I've posted this on benzworld and gotten no responses so I'll post it here.

My 92 300SD seats are at the end of their useful life. The leather on all of them is not salvageable on any of the seats and the seating areas of the front have already been replaced with matching 'tex' substitutes at some point in this cars life.

To the point, what would one expect to have to pay for a good used set of seats, both front and rear, in very good shape. I've found a set from a 97 S class car identical in color and leather material and in extremely good condition for their age.

There are several ways to view the market for these. A two generation old car isn't all that highly sought after, and the market for these is pretty thin so one would think that there would be some ability to negotiate, yet what I've found is that most sellers so far have wanted $1k for their seats no negotiation, which to me is out of range for the age, and even a year later they're still at that price and they still have them and they still refuse to negotiate.

At any rate, comments, advice, suggestions welcome, let me hear it.

Thanks

steve a

I had the same problem when looking to replace my seats. If you are desperate, then pay the price for really good ones. That's about what they go for. I chose to wait and search for ones in my price range. You may have to travel to get them. Search all the local pull a part yards, craigslist and ebay salvage cars. I wound up buying a totaled car for $500 that had a very good interior, had it shipped (in state) to my house and had plenty of parts left for spares and ultimately sold other stuff here and on Ebay. That may be extreme for you, but as a result I got my seats free. I junked the rest of the car for $250

I guess that's my method of comparison, for what individuals want for their seats I could about buy a wreck off Copart and ship it to my door. There aren't many W140's here in town, perhaps a half dozen that I know of / have seen, so they never appear for parts or on CL and even if they did they probably wouldn't have very good seats in them. There's only one U-pull and they never have gotten a W140. There's only one W140 in town in a salvage yard and unfortunately the yard sold the sunroof and windshield out of the car and that ruined the interior/dash/wood etc. Unfortunate, it was my color too.

I do frequently visit Copart to see if there's a wrecked W140 within the 500 mile range that might have seats to offer. The problem with this solution is that I would probably part the whole thing out and TPTB here in Des Moines have a definite problem with unlicensed vehicles spending time in your driveway. If it has no tag it becomes an easy target, and they can tow off of private property if the vehicle has no tags. Hiding it in the garage isn't possible because it already has two cars in it.

The seats I've found are in excellent shape so I'll probably just drive the ~500 miles to get them and be done with it. The price is lower than $1k and about where I'd like to be on these.

Thanks
