Question w124 front grill sugestion's?

Guys, I want to change the front grille on my 88 w124, It has the amg "big star" grille at the moment but I dont think it suits the look of the car. I quite like the look of the avantgarde style grill or maybe a black mesh insert with a body coloured suround.

Any sugestions guys?

Go with the stock grill, but paint the insert black like mine. Still stays classy IMO

Agreed. I have not seen a single aftermarket grille that looks as good as the stock one. All it takes is some elbow grease, sand paper, primer and paint!

If you want to go a little upscale, I am sure you could "facelift" the W124.
Anybody know what is needed and how the process goes?

I've got a spare grille insert so I'll spray it black and see how it looks on the car. My car has no chrome anywhere but the front grille, so it stands out a bit too much. My estate has the facelifted front end but I prefer the squarer look of the pre facelift cars. I may try a few things till I find a setup that suits the cars character.

carat, simply removing the large Star insignia from the grill will improve the front end's appearance. I dislike the large Star on any MB model and would never own one, but that's just me ... too over-the-top for my taste.

It is very out of place on my car, I havent liked it from day 1. I think it sit's well on a g-wagon and some newer stuff, but on these kind of cars it's overkill.

The S600 grille would be my only choice if you really did not like stock. But that's so old and dated - the glossy "fins" give it a very cheap appearance.

Consider upgrading to the E look as well (94-95 W124). But this would require changing your bumpers, side cladding and trunk lid fascia to have the chrome accents.

Have you considered blacking out the grill completely ? If its a dark car you could give it a more subdued look by painting black or same as body color.

I am going to try this in the next week or two. Will see how it turns out

Yes - the star must go!

x2 on body color where the chrome borded is and black in the center grill area.

Avantgarde grill would look okay too.

I went with a full facelift all around and avantgarde grill. love it so far

Royal grill treatment

I suggest the "royal" grill treatment.

Take one of your parts car grill inserts down to London, and find an artist who can paint a portrait of Willie and Katie on it!!

Hip, happening, au current, and guaranteed to get a photo of your car into one of your many daily papers over there

It escapes me why you haven't adorned the grille with the Wanderers' blue stripes. Each grille slat could be a separate stripe.

I'm all for painting the regular insert matte or semi gloss black.

I like the concept of painting everything the same color as the body. No chrome at all.

How about this?

Ok guys, just to see what it would look like I sprayed the chrome black and put some cheap mesh in the center. What do you think????

Looks sick, I love it Get a flat emblem instead of the stand up star and it'll look so mean.

My only suggestion would be to put a bend in the middle of the mesh so it follows the natural contour of the frame and it won't be as flat.
