What products to shampoo carpets?

Bought a nice 9gal Craftsman Wet/Dry Vac....Just scrubbed all the carpets using a bucket of dishwashing soap and water then sucked it up.

Any other tips of tricks/products that may do it better?

Any brand of commercial upholstery cleaner. Put it in a trigger spray and pre-treat the are you are going to extract. Give it a minute a or two and continue to treat as necessary. A soft brush with help with problem areas.

Don't use detergents as the suds is something that you do not want to vacuum up. Also detergents (dish and like) do not contain surfactants.

If you are trying to stay low budget Lemon Ammonia (1 QT to 3 QT water with 2 TBS of Tide and 2 TBS of rubbing alcohol (used as a defoamer) is a good alternative.

I have said Lemon Amomonia as straight uncented amomonia can take your breath away especially in close quarters of car.

I'm going to rent a big carpet shampooer for the house this week. My hope is to get the handheld thingie to do the cars as well. Probably pre treat then go all out!

Use the upholstery tool to pretreat by spraying the fabric with the trigger. If you put upholstery tool to fabric, pull trigger, then extract soloution 2 inches later it doesn't give the "best" results. Repeated use will, but they do want you to buy the chemicals

I think hot water with deteregent is the best option for carpet cleaning. you can also use carpet extractor and dry carpet cleaner.

Just bought a carpet cleaner/extractor last week from Sears. Things one of the best investments I've ever bought. The water once done was just completely black. Pretty disgusting what you have been sitting on in your house...
Don't fall for those stupid solutions you buy @ $20/gallon. 50:50 mix Simple green and Vinegar works as good if not better (~$6-7/gal)! (yeh sure smells a little for a few hours, but then its gone).

Step 1: Call the mobile detailer.
Step 2: Open a bottle of beer.
Step 3: Put feet up.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 as necessary.

Awesome!

Another very good product is LA's Awesome, you can get it at most of the Dollars stores for $1 a quart. It's a yellow/orange liquid that is a fantastic grease cutter. You can use it straight on bearing grease on your carpet and it will remove it, dilute it and use it with an extractor it works great.
