I don't have one in my 300, but in all my 900's I had this style dash mats. Seems to have helped prevent cracking as the dashes (know to crack) didn't any of the 3 900's I had. The best thing about these mats IMO was that I no longer had glare on the windscreen from reflections off the shiny dashboard. Just makes it easier to see out. I always went with black for this reason. -G

The junkyard alternative - cheaper... (a w126 story)
A few years ago I found a wrecked '81 300SD with a blue dash cover overlay attached, at a junkyard in Los Angeles.
I simply pulled it off - the Velcro holding it in place came loose finally - and got it for $10 along with some other bits, and then took it to an upholstery shop in nearby Tarzana on Reseda Blvd. (Next door to Mr MB Motors who was doing other work on my '91 560SEC at the time.) The upholstery shop owner spread out some newspapers on the floor of his bay, then very carefully - with a rattle can of black paint, sprayed the coverlay back and forth, and across (both directions) but not too much, on each pass, and got a nice color match that looked fine. It took him less than 5 minutes. After 30 minutes drying. it was done. I asked him how much I owe? And he said "Whatever you feel it's worth". A $20 bill pleased him well. I planned to keep the car a LONG time, with that on there (the dash was already perfect) so I did NOT want to attach it to the car's dash with Velcro, which could leave marks after years being on there, I thought, So I went to a w126 owning friend's home in the San Fernando Valley and he coaxed the leading edges of the mat into the space behind the windshield, carefully with a long putty knife tool, and it has held pretty perfectly for 2-3 years now. And if the donor car's coverlay is from a first year US spec 300SD sedan, and the donee car was my last year 560SEC gasser coupe, that is proof enough that ANY dash coverlay from '81 to '91 w126. and any model would work the same - the dashes on ALL of them are identical. The w126 euro dash tops are identical too for all years.
