Driver's Door Map Pocket

Hello to all!

Can anyone offer up any suggestions as to how to reattach the map pocket on the driver's side interior door panel. Mine has come off and over the years I have duct taped it, crazy glued it, and all other types of nonsense. Most of the plastic clips have broken off.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Nick

R & R map pocket

Remove the entire door panel, and then the map pocket from the panel. Apply Perfect Glue Liquid Nails adhesive to all the attachment points, broken plastic rivets, etc, and put pocket back on. After that dries, you may also be able to drill out a few of the rivet posts, and glue in a wide headed roofing nail that has been cut short.

While the map pocket is off, use Loctite Super Glue Gel to secure the vinyl back on to the plastic frame .

Broken obscure plastic trim pieces

After screwing around for years with a broken speaker grill on the rear door of the C280, I happened to be at the dealer and inquired about what a replacement would cost. The guy keyed in a whole lot of information and finally said it was available, but it would take a week to get it because it was in Germany. I asked him how much, and he keyed in a lot of stuff and finally said $17.50. I bought it.

On the same car a few years later I broke both speaker grills on the dash when I took the instrument panel out. Same story - had to wait a week, but together they cost about $14, or something like that.

Mercedes seems to think that it's not worth charging a lot of money on parts that they sell very few of. I now always ask for the price of any obscure part that I might otherwise be tempted to repair or get from a junkyard. I would definitely see if you can replace that map pocket - the drivers door is slammed shut all the time, and a repair job may not hold up well.

Hey Steve;

Thanks for the idea. I happened to be passing by our local MB dealership yesterday and stopped into the parts shop. Without the speaker grill they wanted $187 for the map pocket.

I'm more inclined to try and repair mine

It was worth a try - if the repair doesn't hold up, maybe you could try a want-to-buy on the parts for sale forum here. You can probably get the entire panel from a boneyard or on eBay, though it may not be cheap. If you go the new route, Phil may be able to get it a little cheaper than the dealer.

Hey Doc, what year and model is the patient? I just looked on ebay and some panels are inexpensive.
