Is it safe to have my 1983 300D detailed?

Hi all,
After 20 years of use, my 300D has accumulated little spots and flaws in the paint. I'd like to get it professionally detailed to bring my exterior closer to what the original finish was like. I ask this question because I know that the detailing process involves abrasives or abrasive type cleaners to clear the swirl marks etc. Is this safe for the finish of my car? What exactly does my car have in terms of paint coats? Does it even have a clear coat? Thanks a lot for the advice.

Alex

If your car has metalic paint, it may have a clear coat, if not, probably not. One way to tell is to take some cleaner wax or polish and try rubbing a spot. If the rag turns the color of your paint, no clear coat.

As far as having it detailed, as long as you take it to a good experienced shop, they will do the job properly. Although they can't do miracles, your car will look much better. If you have one of the non-metalic paints, you'll be amazed at how well they clean up.

If you are so inclined and want to save a few bucks, check out Lee's FAQ on detailing and in a couple of hours you'll have it looking good, have a sore arm and about $100 in your pocket.

Bill,
My car is silver colored and I don't think anything comes off on the polishing pad so I guess it has a clear coat. I've actually been telling myself that I'll just dedicate a day or two to detailing it myself to save the money. My car and I know that's never going to happen so I think I'm just going to take it to a shop. I'll ask around and find a good one. Overall though, is this process damaging to my paint job? Will it take years off the paint's life? Thanks a lot!

Done properly, it will add years to the life of your paint. A good shop will know what to do. Once it's detailed, wash it often, and wax it monthly and it will look great.

Bill, thanks. As soon as it gets a little warmer, I'll get my car detailed and see how it turns out.
