Surface rust

Define surface rust Snibble, rust on bare metal or just coming through the paint? Bare metal I'd just use an acid treatment through paint I'd use a cutting compound.Bear

There is a product called POR 15 and it's magic! You simply wire brush the area, paint this stuff on and forget about rust. It can be painted over using their special primer.

It's not cheap, about $30 a quart, but it really works. I used it on my son's old BMW that had a rusty trunk. It's been 9 months and the rust has stopped! It can even be used to fill holes using their special mesh.

If you use it, don't open the can like a normal can of paint. Poke two holes in the top, one for a vent and the other for the material to come out. When you are done, put a screw in each hole. Then when you want to use it later, unscrew the screws. If you open the can the conventional way, the can will be bonded shut.

POR 15 is based out of Morristown New Jersy. so I guess something good comes from Jersey.

Thanks for your suggestion on opening cans. I've used Por 15 and also a product called corroless. It's about the same as por. But ruined many a can by opening it but no more thanks to you.
By the by the guy in Jersey is very reputable, I met met him at the fall Hershey show.

Interesting tip, Bill.

I just ordered some of this stuff to use on the area near the jack holes. I see a bit rust there.

What do you use to punch the holes? Will a drill bit work (drill holes)?

The instruction says to use a food wrap in between the can and the lid but I doubt that would work.

If you have rust around the jack holes, and this is a car you want to keep. you may want the opinion of a professional body person. Removing the rusted area and welding in replacemnt pieces at such a crucial area is probably better.

Ethan:

Thanks for the advice.

Now I only have a little surface rust outside the jack hole. That protective layer MB put on is slowing chipping away.

I got it repaired already by using rust converters but I heard this POR-15 is superior so I will do it again in the spring. I also bought a can of marine protective spray (supposed to be good even in salt water situation) and will use that to re-spray the rocker panels.

You can use a drill or an awl (punch). If you use a drill, make sure you clean off the bit. If you use a punch, make sure the can is secure so it won't tip oner when you tap the punch with a hammer.

Also, make sure you wear gloves, it's not that toxic, but if it dries on your hands, it'll have to wear off.
