Advice on Waxing 83 300D!!
Hi,
I can't remember the last time my car was waxed. I think I attempted it. I used to park it in a garage, but now I am living elsewhere and have to park outside. It is an 1983, original blue paint. Oxidized a bit but in good shape I want to get it professionally washed. So, someone said I should Not use clay on the vehicle, it could damage the paint further since the car is old. And some people say it would help. One guy who has a good reputation said he could use a higher grade wax since it's parked outside. A Polymar sealant. He said he uses a product called Polymar 2. This is twice the cost of a regular wax. Any advice on the claying and the wax? Thanks much |

dont get any wax on any of the black plastic/rubber bits. you wont see it at first but after a couple weeks it will show up as whiteish waxiness that is impossible to remove.

Claying is the best thing you can do as long as the clay material is "mild" and not the aggressive type. It removes contaminants embedded on the paint, without damaging the paint. Make sure you lubricate it proper when claying!!

Recommend claying all painted surfaces per the directions on the clay container. Then use Meguiar's Cleaner Wax, followed by an application of a premium carnuba wax. It's time to rewax when water doesn't bead up on the painted surfaces.

its a longish process but worth it. Your car will look great.
supplies bottle of 3m hand glaze cleaner wax (tons of choices) S100 jar from Harley dealership sheila shine from ace hardware (for the brightwork) - or some proper brightwork shiner - W123 has lots of brightwork or visit the autopia forums and order a few supplies of collinite wax and sealer - its really really long life and suited for cars parked outside.

Does clay remove water spots?

No!
Wash them off with Dawn. It strips the conditioners, grease and wax off the paint too, so you will need to re-polish and then wax. Then you need only to use a automotive wash solution (Mother's or Meguires) for subsequent washings. Do use a two-bucket washing system and minimize the amount of rubbing of the paintwork when using dry cloths. You should 'pat' it dry to lessen water spots.

Thank you. I wish my blue 190E will continue to look the same, now it's parked outside.
