W123 - rear shelf replacement

I took out the rear shelf to attach new speakers and it's very flimsy, dirty and nasty really. I'd like to replace it and get new carpet as well. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to make this rear panel out of? I'm thinking some kind of thin particle board or something.

well if you want to keep the factory look then just cover the old one in fiberglass and then re-carpet. I made one out of MDF and made the speakers raised up. I now have 6x9 in small boxes in the rear deck and it looks real good. I did however lose the first aid box but that didn't bother me.

Was that MDF 1/2" or 3/4"? I would think the 1/2" might be enough. Is there metal framework under there to support it?

is was 1/2 you have to shave the front thought so the back seat can settle down all the way. The rear deck is nothing but metal under there. If you have ever taken the panel off for the gas tank just above the tank is the whole rear deck. In order to take the rear deck off you must take the c pillar panels off. be careful not to break those because I broke one of mine. although i was able to fix it, thank god.

removing rear deck for carpet replacement

I need some help with this repair. My (1985 300d) rear deck carpet is disintegrating and with the windows down, bits of carpet fluff would swirl around the cabin. I thought this would be an easy fix, just "pop out" the panel and recover with a piece of fabric or carpet.

Full disclosure, I am a complete novice, and have succeeded in removing my speakers punching a hole in the flimsy particle board ( while pushing up from the trunk; crack --a hole) and dropping a small screwdriver into the hole where the right side speaker was.

I found this thread and was hoping for some pictures, but alas none. I don't know what a c pillar is ( and i always break something every time I dismantle this car )and I was thinking about removing the backseat to get at this deck, but would love to avoid unnecessary removal of anything.

does anyone have pictures of this? Or explain clearly how to get this out?
Please help, I don't like picking the carpet fluff out of my hair.
Rachel

"A" pillar= the very front upright support running from the car base to the roof.
"B" pillar= the second upright on a sedan
"C" pillar= the rear upright.

Coupes and roadsters technically do not have a "B" pillar but the rear pillar is still referred to as the "C" pillar.
