Recoloring Vinyl trim with SEM ColorCoat... anyone done this?

Restoring, and refurbishing my Newly purchased 190D left me looking for 4 door trims to replace the broken and sun damaged originals..
After an exhaustive search I found 4 correct year model trims at the Junkyard and as it was 1/2 price weekend they were $8.50 each!
Down side was the color is not correct.
Original is the top one, and I think the color is called Palamino.

I heard you can recolor Vinyl with a product from SEM, called Color Coat.

http://semproducts.com/Catalog.asp?prod=190

Here is the color chart. Palamino 15323 looks correct..
http://semproducts.com/images/Users/Chip%20Cards/VCS%20CC%202008.pdf

Anyone done this before or have any advice or comments?

Their products work quite well.

Make sure you get several spray cans from the same batch. Follow their prep/cleaner etc to the "TEE". Several thin coats per the directions and you'll be quite happy.

Someone here did head rests and seats to fix a "pink-a-mino" car.

In my experience, absolutely do not use the spray cans. Use the water-based stuff they mix onsite. It's also SEM, but is custom mixed onsite and is as durable as anything else. It is far more durable than the SEM in cans. You need to bring in another small piece to match the color with, such as a sun visor or the underside of the center armrest (that's what I've always brought in). After you get your quart or half-gallon, or whatever size you purchase, you use a spray gun to spray it.

Suggestion..

TO get really nice results- you want to take the door handle and map pocket of the panel. Clean, prep, paint all of them seperate and re-assemble.

I'd guess you'll have to drill off the plastic tails. Then re-assemble with small screws and washers.

Post some pics of them done!

Thanks for the advice, it is what I planned to do.
Don't know what happened to this Pass door... some fool pulled the handle right out!
The rest of the trims were toast... the tops are weather cracked, and the armrest areas came unstuck and have bridged... horrible!
I am close to A1 Foam and Fabric in Santa Ana and was in there last week, and they stock the cans.. but I will check if they have the water based stuff.
Will post some pics when I am done!
I am gonna get the car tinted when I get all the windows working!

Well, I went to A1 and they had the Colorcoat I wanted, so I decided to try it! Needed to glue down a couple of edges, so got some of their Trim Contact adhesive.
Asked them how well it works and they said they have never had any probs if you use the Vinyl Prep first... so I got some of that too.

On the way home I put some of the Vinyl Prep on a cloth and rubbed it on my armrest....
WOW!
I guess it was really dirty!

So, I got home, disembled and prepped the componants..

Started with the Pocket.
Prepped...

Painted...

Donor trim cleaned with the Prep...

Part Painted...

2 coats...

did you do multiple coats or just lay it thick on the first run??

I've used sem for other applications but when I did my w123's interior swap to black I had to paint one door card black and just went with my usual duplicolor black and it was a 100% match

I usually do 5 thin coats. One angled from each direction and the final one from the top "viewing" angle. This eliminates the shadowing effect the pebbled finish of the vinyl can cause.

I changed some Palomino panels to the Mercedes dark blue and have yet to see any fade or bleed through.

I've never gone from a dark color to a light color. Has anyone done this and what were your results?

The whole trick seems to be to get the vinyl CLEAN and dry! I scrubbed mine 4 or 5 times and did a final clean using a 50-50 mix of denatured alcohol before painting. Using the alcohol or the clean prep seems to eliminate the "fish-eye" effect you can get from an un-noticed water bubble.

Door trim/moulding

Does that stuff actually absorb into the vinyl or just lay on top of it like paint?

Here is the final look on the Pass front door trim.
I took this Pic without the flash.
The finish is more satin than gloss.

I am happy with the result so far!
