Car covers

What are the best car covers? I need two. One for bad weather, and one just a sun only or dust cover. Any recommendations?

I use two covers
1) 100% cotton cover, for sun protection and keeping the car interior cool in the hottest temps, pretty good job at keeping my black car paint cool to the touch also. In the four years I have used this cotton cover, daily in the summer and often in the winter the outter beige color of the cover faded to white while the inside of the cover maintained its original cover.

2) Bad weather protection, Noah fabric the Mercedes OEM car cover uses this material, I had also owned another type of car cover material for bad weather it performed similar to the Noah. Amazing how well it keeps car almost completely dry when saturated after days of rain. great for ice and hail protection plus door nick prevention

Get a car lock and cable, and for windy weather a fabric rope to cinch the cover tight around waist of car is important. Wrap duct tape around lock so it never gets a chance to scratch paint.

Covers are great for theft prevention.

try www.covercraft.com I'll double check the name
Mercedes is a good place for the Noah.
I got my 100% Cotton cover from Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories, they may be the same as Covercraft.

It must be a custom cover for your year and model car.

Only get a cover in a very light cover, keeps car cooler and help you to spot any dirt.

100% cotton only, no synthetic fibers, if this were just going to be for dust protection in a garage I would say also consider flannel. Anytime you get into anything but 100% cotton you have to deal with the possibility off scratching.

When using the cover it is a good ides to wash the car weekly and waxed every couple of months or more, that keeps the paint clean enough that you are not rubbing particulate across the paint

Noah fabric is lined with a barrier to help keep you from pulling any harmful fibers across the car. try not to drag the cover across the paint. After four years of using a cover any light marks that a cover has made easily buffed out with Griot's Fine Hand Polish

The cover must be put on and taken off the car in a particular manner, check out www.carcareonline.www in their car cover section.

Car covers keep things like weather stripping from sun damage I think it helps keep the car quieter over the years from wind noise, keeps the interior from sun damage, keeps bird damage at bay.

Thanks for the info, Ethan. Do you have any specific brands or places to buy them? I have heard of the Noah, but for the other one, should it just be plain 100% cotton, or are there fancy materials for the sun only covers too?

mbtjc,

Go to: beverlyhillsmotoring.com for the best quality fitted car covers in all styles of protection. I have been more than satisfied with everything I have ever purchased from them.

Check out this nice little write-up. I'm in the same situation right now. I've decided on a NOAH based cover myself. Now it's just a matter of WHERE I buy it from.

:UPDATE:

Just ordered my cover. I actually went with a cover using the WeatherShield material. It's actually a material made by Kimberly-Clark but it's then modified by another company. The modified material is actually what's called the WeatherShield material.

The cover is then constructed by CoverCraft. It's suppose to be more water resistent, tighter packing/folding, and home washable (vs NOAH - not suppose to be washed/dried at home). It's typically about $100 more than the NOAH cover tho.

PROBLEMS WITH NOAH/COVERCRAFT

Dear fellow board members,

I want you all to be aware of a problem I encountered with my newly-purchased Noah/Covercraft car cover: It leaves an unsightly film on the windows.

Unfortunately, my inquiries to Noah/Covercraft were met with less than appropriate customer service: They recommended that I commercially wash, at my time and expense, the new car cover, without either an apology or any form of compensation.

Until Noah/Covercraft solves their design and customer service problems, I recommend that all members look to a different manufacturer/product for car covers.

Sincerely,
Bob

What kind of film? realise that the covers should be washed occasionally - but in the commercial washers you find in a do it yourself laundromat.

It is a greasy film; less visible on the paint, but quite a bother on the windows. One wouldn't expect a new product (especially a high-end product like the Noah cover) to need commercial washing. After it becomes dirty, yes, of course, but not when brand new.

Just got a gray Noah cover for my wife's Altima from www.calcarcover.com and haven't noticed any film or any other substance being deposited on the car, other than some dust that was on the cover and it blows off. About the only thing I would warn buyers about is be careful when choosing a cover that has a fabric lining on the inside. While it may sound nice and luxurious, it's a pain to clean all the stuff that sticks to it if you ever drop it on the ground.

Noah/Covercraft Update

I just wanted to report that Covercraft did send me a nice sunshade; let's hope that this represents an improvement in their customer service and that they resolve the "film" problem referenced above.

The fit of the cover is quite good: even in high wind, the cover stays firmly in place. For this reason, I highly recommend custom fit covers over generic versions.

A little-known trick with Covercraft is that they frequently have blem or overstock covers that they sell for a fraction of the normal retail price. You have to phone them to see what they have in stock, but I got a top of the line cover for my old 300D for way under $100, I want to say it was $45. It's definitely worth a call.
