Anyone interested in wood upgrade/finish??

I am having my uncle make me a custom dash for my w201, including a wood shifter and all interior door handles. Wanted to see if anyone would be interested and getting this done also. I haven't gotten it yet, but I gave him all the dash pieces from a w201 that was in the junk yard. Once I get mine done I will post pictures. I'm thinking I want something with a reddish tint to it, he is suggesting manzanita burl so I have to find a place where to get the wood from. Also, these wood pieces won't be the thin stuff, it will be solid, durable wood.

Trim pieces

I have three 560 SEL's and trim in each of them is cracked or ill-fitting. I have thought long and hard about making new pieces, especially with advent of 3-D printers out there.

All the sets I've seen online are either slightly marred or extremely expensive and just pieces/parts.

I'd be very interested in what you accomplish.

Yes. I will be going this weekend to get some wood. However, My uncle informed me that he would be able to accomplish this with regular wood, staining, and shellac. He said that Mercedes doesn't use full wood, but layers of wood backing with an exotic veneer glued on top. I don't know if this is true or not, but my uncle has extensive knowledge of MBz ranging from the 80's to 90's models. This is somewhat a relief to me because I was wondering how much the wood was going to cost me. So once I get this up and going with him I will see if this would be something forum members would be interseted in and possibly create a site or a facebook page. I know that getting good quality wood trim for our older MBZ can be a pain.

Interior upgrade

Finally found an interior upgrade that I think I'll be happy with. Its not wood, I think I am gonna go with a marble/formica interior finish. I don't know if its ever been done, but I think it would look nice. So all the wood interor and plastic parts would be replaced with this.

Ismalley, a cracked "wood piece" I removed/replaced in our 1991 300CE rear console was actually metal covered with a thin wood veneer. When you think about it, solid wood is more likely to crack due to the regular temperature swings and low humidity in most cars, plus exposure to UV rays.

Yes, he showed me that the climate control wood on the w201 is nothing other than a very thin piece of venner over a piece of metal and the center control is only a few millimeters thick stapled and glued to a plastic backing, but also the "zebrano" is just a thin veneer over a thin piece of wood. He showed me this by peeling it off . As far as the UV exposure and low humidity being factors in causing the more thicker piece to crack, not so sure as there are now tons of newer and higher endurance coatings and uv protection available now than 20-30 years ago. To get a minimum of at least 10 years out of a redone interior is still a win-win situation, plus the upgrade to various different trim pieces is a bonus. But I'm going with a solid surface formica interior which is extremely durable. Will post up photos once this begins and show the finished product.

Arrow Progress of interior wood trim

Ok guys so here are some photos....one is of the damaged center console part that has been peeled, chipped and cracked, then the others are all refined pieces that have not been completed yet, but you can at least see the progress. Also, he made another center console piece that I have for a w201,, same is in the picture, but he elected to use the original one. All these pieces will be stained and finished with a durable high gloss finish. I forget the name of the finish he is going to use. I will also post a picture of the custom wooden knob I'm having made, complete with MB star at the top.

Arrow Custom Wood Interior Update

Ok, Guys so here is the custom shifter knob that I had made carved by hand out of solid wood. It is not quite finished only thing left is the actual glaze that he will put over it to give it that "encased in glass" look. The only thing that is from the car is the actual metal rod. Everything else was free hand carved and the metal emblem was added by him as well. I let him do his own design of the shifter, I just wanted something a little bulkier than the stock 190 shifter, but if you can give him a picture or drawing of whatever you want, he can do it and that goes for anything in the interior. I wanted to post a picture of the knarly piece of wood that he made the shifter from, but he doesn't like me getting pictures of his work before its completed. So what do you guys think?
