W126 Dial needle removal and refitting.

Hi, I am new to the forum, having been registered at Benzworld and the W126 forum, but I was reading this forum and there is a lot of useful W126 stuff posted here, by real-world posters.

I know this topic was running a while back, but I haven't found the information that I want, in the older posts. Maybe some-one can give me the advice that I am looking for.

I have a set of metal chromed rings and a set of white dial faces, which were given to me by a friend, who has had them for a year or so and now has no use for them, as he has sold his car. I want to fit them to my 1989 W126, 300se.

I know the process for removing the instrument panel, and getting to the dials, but I am looking for the method of removing the needles. What I want to know is do the positions of the needles move when you lift them off the spindles ?

I have read a few sites that describe, vaguely, that the needles need to be lifted over the stop pins, but why is this ? Are the needles spring loaded so that they need to be re-installed by moving them again a spring loaded resistance ?

In relation to the speedometer needle, is there not a stop pin for this ? If not, how do you know the correct end position, when the needle is at zero ?

Perhaps some-one could post the exact method of removing and then replacing the needles.

Best regards, parkman
