Seat Covers

The back seat cover in my 84 300D is shot. It's a really nice car with no rust and a high quality re-paint in the original color and the suspension overhaul is nearing completion. So I'm considering recovering the back seat. GAHH has an MB Tex kit to accomplish this for about $690, which leaves the cost of installation.

I talked to a local auto upholstery shop and they said they can install the GAHH kit for $250 or they can make me a leather seat cover and install it for $750. Granted, these are both options which are more expensive than I'd considered myself willing to pay. However, it seems like the leather cover is a much better deal. Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing and able to shed any light on the advisability of one option over the other?

I would recommend the MB tex. A lot more durable and it will match your front seats (they are MB tex also?). GAHH has great products and great customer service.

First of all, what are the front, leather or tex?
In any case, buy the kit, it's going to be the as close to factory quality as possible. I've worked with a number of upholstery shops in the past and while they say that they can make it as good as the kit, it never is. Either the pleats are a little off (as in every one is slightly different in size) or the texture is different. GAHH supplies the classic center so they produce very good kits.

There are also other companies that offer good kits for much less. One is Auto replacement convertible soft tops and seat covers for car interiors. I've seen their stuff and it's also very good and much less expensive.

The seats in the car are MB Tex. My inclination is to go with the tex. But when the trim guy said he could do the leather for less, my ears just naturally perked up. So is it your experience that trim guys generally can't sew as well as they think/say? This guy of course claims he can "stitch anything."

Have you used the covers from that site Auto replacement convertible soft tops and seat covers for car interiors Their prices certainly are an improvement.

I got my seat kit from TopsOnLine. The owner is a guy named Vic. By far the cheapest prices and he stands 100% behind his product. I am thnking an entire LEATHER interior for 2014 pricing is $1,435.00. One cannot beat his pricing or work or quality. Mine are in red. Highly recommend him.
