|
dash cracks - would you do anything?
I have two cracks on the dash of my '86 560SEL. They've been like this for years. The car is garaged. Would you do anything? What's the probability they will expand since they have been this way for the 10 years I've owned the car?

They have a vinyl repair kit,at most auto parts stores.I bought a fabric cover for mine,on ebay.

Drill a small diameter e.g., 1/8 - 3/16" very shallow hole at the end of the cracks to stop their direction of travel. Then use a vinyl repair kit or a silicone to fill the cracks. If you find something with a similar grain/texture it can be used to imprint the sealer as it dries.

Both of mine have dash cracks. The SDL worse than the SL. PO of the SL had one of those plastic "dash caps" installed before I got the car (car was only 12 years old at that point) and I'm here to tell you, that POS didn't hold up in the summer heat. Warped and curled, despite being glued to the dash.
I finally removed it a few years ago and spent DAYS cleaning the glue residue off the original dash. Still has some slight discoloration from it, but looks better than the cap ever did, even with the crack. The way I look at it: It's a 30+ year old car, it's allowed not to be perfect. I'm the same age as the SL and I'm sure not perfect either, doesn't seem fair to hold a double standard!

I did some tests on a broken glovebox door with various products including vinyl adhesive, super glue, and some water-based filler that's specifically designed for repairing cracks. The special filler gave me the best appearance, so I used it on the car. Admittedly the installation didn't go well, as I was in a hurry and dyed the dash with water based dye fairly quickly after adding the filler, which washed it out partially. The cracks were back in a couple days. I didn't bother complaining to the company that sold me the filler, but I wasn't real happy with my results. YMMV though.
