Needing Help
I need to ask the forum if there is a way to get clean the original carpet as seen on the staining left behind from the floor mats. What happened is that during the years, the backing off the floor mats has come off and has embedded itself into the original car's floor carpets. I have always vacuumed the floor mats in place and never removing them until recently and found this mess. The padding off the floor mats have come off and left a type of sticky mess that won't vacuum off. Is there a way to remove this mess without harming the carpets. The car is a 1987 300SDL.
Thanks Herb |

Not really. The material has broken down and is disintegrating. Try a stiff scrub brush to get the worst of it off. It will continue deteriorating.
If the carpets themselves are still in good shape you can glue some jute backing on them to extend their life. Coco mats, although pricey, are a good replacement.

Thanks Mike. I intend to get rid of the carpet mats ( the ones with the black backing that I bought to initially protect the original carpets). I want to keep the original carpets but I need to know how to clean them without damaging them. Any ideas how to clean the black disintegrating mess left by the carpet mats?

airfoil, try an automotive carpet cleaner ... typically spray it on, let it dry, then vacuum off. If that fails, with your VIN at hand call the Parts Department at your local MB dealer and ask if new carpeted inserts are available for your car. I expect the front carpet inserts with the high density foam backing will be very expensive. Keep in mind, given enough time & money anything is possible.

Believe it or not I have had very good luck spot cleaning both synthetic and wool carpets using windex.
