Anyone out there tried boat wax for their cars?
Howdy gentlemen,
Was helping my friend wax wax his boat over the weekend, and found that 3M Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax give a very good shine to the fibreglass and painted surfaces of the boat. The surfaces were amazingly slippery too. I bought a can of this stuff from the boat shop, and am intending to try it out on my car this weekend. I cant say that my car's paint is in concourse condition, but I got a hunch that this thingy is going to protect the surface longer than the regular waxes, afterall if it can take a beating at sea, regular road dirt and grime would be a breeze. Have anyone tried this before?? I will let you guys know of the results I get. Last edited by Benzie; 06-03-2002 at 12:24 AM. |

I've actually used a polymer boat paint protectant/wax on cars before with excellent results. This wax was actually originally designed for Marine use but many used it for their cars.
I'm not sure exactly what 3M has but I would try it on a small inconspicous area before applying on the whole car. You might also want to determine if the formula has any abrasives in it. Wouldn't want to use it too often if it does.

Hi Placo1.
Thanks for your response. The contents of the wax include the following 1.Hydrotreated Light Petroleum Distillates 2. Heavy Alkylate Naphtha 3. Carnauba Wax 4. Montan wax 5. Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (Whew! Try saying that in a single breath!) 6. Micronized wax 7. Silicone Acrylate Copolymer All of which I believe do not have harsh abrasives (if any.) Yeah, I try them on the insides of the doors first to make sure nothing goes wrong...... |

Hi guys,
An update. Tried the wax on my white civic, wouldn't want to foul the benz. I must say that I was very impressed by the results of the wax. I washed down the car with some household dishwash detergent and started applying 3M Marine protective liquid wax on the trunk lid. This thingy was really easy to apply and take off! I dare say that most of the swirls were removed and the surface was glass smooth. I proceeded with an application of 3M Marine Ultra performance Paste wax, buff followed by another thinner application. Wowee!! Now water beads on the surface and runs off entirely when I open the trunk lid. I know detail purists would probably think I am nuts to use a marine product for my car, but this stuff is really something!! Now to wax the rest of the honda and see how the paint holds up over time. Will update everyone with some pics when I get my hands on a digital cam. |

Does this wax contain an algaecide, or other toxic materials intended to fight off marine life that likes to cling onto hulls?

Hi PaulC,
Doesn't seem to have any of those toxic stuff in the ingredient list, and it is holding up pretty well, especially the beading of water drops..... it seems to roll right off the car very easily...... and that is a good thing now that I do not have to feather water droplets off the car every morning to prevent water spotting. (I park the honda on the streets.) Looks kinda weird now that the car looks nearly dry after a rainfall though the windows and windshield is spotted with water...... |
