MB Tex no more

I have owned several Mercedes equipped with MB Tex upholstery that wears like iron. I also own a 2012 ML350 with black vinyl seats. This car has less than 50K miles yet the drivers side front seat already has delaminating vinyl and other imperfections. Mercedes gave up on MB Tex for an inferior vinyl.

I've slip-covered the entire seatbacks of my Mercedes-Benz' for over 20 years. I've even slip-covered the seatback of my bought new, C7 Corvette Stingray. Never a problem now with bolsters getting worn through, or decoloring of the vinyl trims on the leather seating surfaces bucket seats. Unprotected? You're going to have wear on your bolsters...

I was able to locate a local auto upholstery shop (Olympic Top Shop, Los Angeles) who was able to order an exact match for the Mercedes black vinyl with a grain texture, and made an excellent repair that looks better than new.

Most Mercedes-Benz interiors are upholstered with Mercedes' proprietary faux leather, a vinyl material called MB Tex. It looks a lot like leather, and is often mistaken for real leather, but is much more durable and lasts, seemingly, forever without cracking or wearing.

Over the last few years Mércedes has stopped using the MB tex type material in their vehicles. The new material is not nearly as durable as MB Tex.
