Advise Needed for Waterspotting
The car in question is a 58 220S Sedan with the original paint (marroon). I am noticing slight almost blush like spotting in the paint. I'm afraid to get too crazy buffing it without knowing what to use to try and not remove any paint. The paint is still good but it's thin in spots. The spotting looks kind of like what you might see from acid rain damage but the car isn't out in the rain. I suspect this paint is a lot more sensitive to being outside in the sun with water on it. What would be best to use to try to minimize the appearance of these spots? A glaze? Some kind of real low abrasive polish? What would be the best machine to use to do this kind of work. I have a 10 inch orbital type buffer that I've used to remove wax from the car. Can that be used to buff too? Is any of the stuff sold by Groit's garage worth the heavy price, in particular the Porter Cable buffer?

If you have actual water spotting, vinegar and water will take care of it.
If it's a defect in the paint, polish will always help to minimize the appearance of defects.

water spots
If its really water spots then a polish will help to get rid of them unless you want to use a cut and polish which is stronger, more abrasive and should get rid of any damaged paint surface like very small stone chips or sand blasting due to flying sand from dirty roads or wind storms. I would prefer to use the newer colour polishes and wax which can mask the spots or even fill very small paint chips and some also have wax sticks which can help to fill bigger chips. I have found that a hand polish is better, but slower as the buffer if not done correctly may leave swirls and spider web type damage to the paintwork especially if you are in a sunny State.
