Silver Paint, 98-2000, were there problems?
Just wondering, the silver paint finshes on Mercedes cars from around 98-2000, were there any problems? I've hear stories in Europe, I noticed my E300 isn't exactly finished perfectly... Just wondering if the paints had clear-coat problems, etc.... Thanks!

Silver is the toughest color by far to get "perfect". I wouldn't doubt there were some variances even coming out of the factory.

newer MB paint
silver IS always suspect! i read LOTS of things about the "newer" paint being more H20 based and being MUCH softer than the older (dino?) paints. mostly complaints about the amount of visible "chipping" on the front and hood. ive read accounts of newer cars being practically ruined by road chips in under 6 months! one guy posted pics of his new MB's hood after 3 months of the same commute that his "older" MB had withstood for years. he was seeking MB to repaint, as i would have also.
i would hope that the overall finish and appearance of the MB factory paint would be high quality. |

The original finish is okay. I mean, the clear is suspect. I mean, you can see variations in spray pattern, the silver finish is also not as smooth as it should be. I mean, a Honda seems to have a better Silver than a Merc... This is really only stuff a trained eye will catch, but its there....
