Question Brake dust inserts for winter use?

Hey guys:

Every day I look at my once beutiful wheels and cry because with all the snow we've had I haven't been able to clean them in a month or so. I can't even see the wheels under the layer of brake dust!

Meanwhile a friend of mine with a 300-SDL has immaculately clean wheels (who ironically rarely washes his car, unlike I). He has the inserts behind them for preventing build up of brake dust. I've never used them because of the extr heat caused by less wind over the calipers.

Would it still be okay to use them only in the winter since it's colder outside?

Thanks for any advice!!

Brake dust shields

If your wheels are o.e., stock, and you don't race or drive autocross, shields will not hurt your brakes. The ones currently sold are vented and cause no problems. An enormous quantity of the Mercedes that go through the Mercedes auctions at Manheim have dust shields on them. P.

Where can you get the shields from?

I've got the bundt-cake wheels, and had scrubbed them with 409 and a toothbrush before putting the wheels back on the car (did a brake job and replaced the wheel bearings a few weeks ago; see Diesel Discussion for the saga), and already they're getting dirty...

If they won't adversely affect brake performance and don't cost a bundle, I'd love ot get my hands on a shield set...I Presume they go on the inside of the wheel and don't "show" very much?

I've got them and really like them (Kleen Wheels).

Up here in Canada I go long periods where I can't properly wash my car.

I agree with others that you shouldn't use the dust shields if you drive/brake hard a lot or race, but otherwise there's no problems.

I got mine at Performance Products and they fit perfect. You have to make sure that you get the ones specifically for your wheel type and size.

Performance is also where I've seen the inserts. Believe me, they do the job! The wheels on my friend's car are immaculate-- and he's one of those guys that'll wash the car as LITTLE as possible.

Hmm...I did a search, and they didn't come up. I wonder if they're unavailable for the 123 cars, or if i missed something...?

I was curious, if anyone has had luck in finding brake dust shields from Performance Products or another vendor?

I am interested in ordering some for my 95 MB E300 Diesel....but could not find any at Performance Products attheir website....

Thanks for any help.

I checked at Performance and found them doing a search under "kleen wheels" (top left of the home page). Once the page comes up, do a search for your particular make and it'll promt you from there.

I searched for a 1980 300-D (123 series) and they are available. The prices range from approx. $30- $65. Didn't go far enough to see what the price was for the 123.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link!

They've got 'em, but it doesn't say anywhere whether ot not they come as a package of 4, or if you have to buy each individually...$38 is a good price for all 4, but I do'nt think I'm ready to pay that much for each one, yet...

Actually, I just did a search on Fastlane (I did so because the search window looked so similar between the two sites), and Fastlane's got 'em as well, at a whole $.04 cheaper.

Interestingly enough, the page said that they'll only for '84 and up cars...I wonder what's different with the '83 and earlier 123's...?

I don't know why they show a difference between 83 and 84 model years. The only possible reason I could think of is, maybe the steel wheels for the 240D (which ended in 83) would be different from the alloy wheels. What fits my 84 300D is Kleen Wheels item # 1204, which is Performance Products stock # 99-024. (Package of 2) Kleen wheels has a phone # for technical support, 1-800-327-6548.

Phone them. 1-800-752-6268

I've found Performance Products customer support staff to be both knowledgable and helpful. They should be able to find a set of Kleen Wheels good for your car, even if the website doesn't.

Thanks to everyone for the information.

I ended up doing a word search in Fastlane for "Kleen wheels" & the part numbers were revealed.

I installed them over the weekend while doing the brakes - very easy.

The price, about $38 (I do not remember the exact price off the top of my head), was for a set of 2 inserts, where 1 insert is needed per wheel.

So far so good, it seems they will work very well, definitely worth the money.
