What clay bar brand do you recommend?¿
Howdy All,
Is there a difference in the different brands of clay bars?¿ I used the Zaino clay bar on my car with great results.

Hi Frank:
I use the Clay Magic that everyone raved about in previous threads, and found it to be great. Others found the Mother's and Mequiar's brands too soft and prone to drag (Although Mequiars says they have 2-3 'hardness' bars available through detail shops). I haven't tried the Zaino bar - maybe next time around, as the CM bar is getting a bit used up.

Howdy John,
The Zaino clay bar works real good but I think the price might be a little much. You get 2 2oz. bars for a total cost of $16.00. A 2oz bar is about 1 1/2"x 2" in size. A friend bought another brand and it was as big as his hand from what he said(I don't know what brand).

DieselHead,
This is what I got from Meguiars and I have also not used the clay before. Here are the steps and if any one can let me know if this is the right sequence. 1. Washing Hi-Tech Wash- 0016 2. Surface Preparation Quik Clay Detailing System - G-1116 or Medallion Premium Paint Cleaner- 9716 3. Polishing Surface Show Car Glaze- 0716 4. Protecting Paint Hi-Tech Yellow Wax - M-2601 Medallion Premium Paint Protection - 9816 5. Maintenance Final Inspection - M3401 |

Howdy All,
The first washing you give the car should be with dish washing soap(liquid dawn). This will get the old wax off. The lubricant that I used with the clay bar was Zaino car wash mixed with water in a spray bottle.(1/2 cap to 12oz. of water).

Griot's has the paint cleaning clay as well as the spray which lubricates as you use it. I've had great success with it. It takes off all kinds of crap that doesn't come off, even with polishing.

This is no different than a favorite wax thread...as long as you get your paint REALLY clean by using overspray clay (no matter the supplier) before using polish and wax or sealer (no matter the supplier) you will be rewarded with an ultra-smooth finish, greater 'depth' to the finish, and a MUCH easier time with the polish and final finish steps than if you did not use the clay.
The keys to using overspray clay successfully are to use lots of spray lubricant to make sure the clay is always floating on a layer of lube and not directly on the paint. Also, don't try to use an entire clay bar at a time. Pinch off pieces of clay bar and flatten them out--I use pieces smaller than the palm of my hand and about 1/4 inch thick. Each time I make a few passes with the clay and I feel the friction from the contaminant reducing, I take the clay and fold it in half, folding the dirty side into itself. This way, I am not exposing the paint to being 'scrubbed' with the contaminants I'm trying to remove. You can tell when it's time to toss out the piece of clay you're using and start a new piece. It's only a little extra work to use the clay and the results more than justify the effort. Just do it, and don't concern yourself with the brand.
