As I understand it all Mercedes built in Model Year 1986 had clear coats on them. Was the car repainted along the way, if not you might want to check. If the clear coat is oxidized you will need to be careful to find out how deep it is, if it's on the surface a good polish will remove it with some effort. If your sure the paint is not clear coated then you will need to check the paint depth and insure you have enough paint to work with. A good polish should straigthen this out as well.
With regards to water spots a good polish would remove this, the Zaino Z5 won't do anything for you on this. You will need to use a polish and wash with Dawn prior to using the Zaino. The reason I say #9 Swirl Remover works on the Carnauba is #9 doesn't really remove the swirls, it hides them with fillers. If you use Zaino you will need to wash with Dawn before applying the Zaino, if you wash with Dawn you will remove the fillers in #9 which essentially defeats the purpose. A rotary will remove the swirls/oxidation by removing the paint around the swirls/oxidation and paint on the oxidation itself making the surface smooth so it doesn't matter if you use Dawn after a rotary. If your looking for longevity and good looks the Meguiars Medallion Products are excellent. Start with their #9 to remove the swirls/light oxidation, then use their precleaner polish and finish with the wax. On a side by side comparison of Medallion with Zaino the finish was very close but the Zaino did reflect better. I'm not sure about longevity but I'd guess about 2.5 months vs 4 months. Zaino shines like crazy, but it lacks depth and emotion. A "good" carnauba will always look better in my opinnion. Keep in mind these are my observations, I know others might disagree on this. Saw your post on Autopia.....pretty funny. :p I thought I was detailed, they make me look like a amateur. To apply the polish the padded cotton will be perfect! I used the Meguiars applicators on mine. The wax has its own applicator which worked well. Hope you have two Microfibers or a good towel, wouldn't want to mix the polish and wax together. Do a before and after of your car in the same position, I forgot to do this. You'll love it!

I am almost certain that my car does not have a clearcoat. When you polish it, blue comes off on the rag. I don't know if my car being a euro has anything to do with it. My dad is the original owner of the car and the only part that has ever been repainted is a quarter panel from a fender bender shortly after it was new...and the panel between the taillights probably 7 or 8 years ago. It seems that that #9 is "safer" since you're not actually taking off paint. So your basic bottom line is that the P21 is better if you're willing to wax it more often? It's cheaper...so that's a big advantage for it.... I'll probably rack my brain over this for a while before I decide!

Haven't used the Pig Snot yet, I want to research it's affects before I start using it. I plan on using it on the underbody and wheels wells. mbtjc, If blue is coming off when you polish then it's definitely not a clear coat, thats surprising! Sounds like the cars in good shape and just in need of a little lovin, good luck and I'm sure whatever your decision it will look good!

I then started w/ the s100 polish, put one coat of wax, and then another coat of wax, and now I'm all done, 3 hours later Result is awesome, looks as good, if not better than the $150 job I used to get from the local detail shop. Night fell so I can't really see for sure that it's better than the shop's work. I will however go out and take pics tonight Oh and I put wax on the chrome wheels too, looks nice!
