Clay - will it remove light clouding in paint?
The resurrection of the 190E continues (213k miles) and it is starting to get there.
I have worked on the paint several times and it is shinny and starting to look pretty good .... but, I can see light clouding in the paint still. My question to the detailing pros: Should I use clay or use a product again like McGuires cleaners such as the Clear Coat/Body Scrub/Paint Cleaner? I used this once already and it produced good results, except the light clouding is still there. Did I just not do it enough? Thank you in advance, Haasman

Haasman,
I'm not an expert but I do know that clay is designed to only remove any surface contaminants which are built up on a paints surface. Contaminants include overspray, industriall fallout, tree sap, bugs and tar. Claying will make the paint smoother and help reflect light better since an even surface is created. If your clear coat is hazed a polish is really the only way to improve this. I guess it really depends on the depth of the haze, if its just on the surface it should be easy to get rid of otherwise you might just have to live with it.

I used to own a 1984 190E in Anthracite and that definitely had a clear coat.
The easiest way to tell is when you polish the car. If your cloth shows evidence of your paint color on it then you don't have clear coat.

Try the clay. My sister's Boxster had a big patch of haze on one of her doors. When you rubbed your hand over it, you could feel that there was a difference in the surface. I tried polish first and it didn't do anything. I didn't put the machine on it, since I didn't want to get too aggressive. I tried the clay and spent about 45 minutes and the entire spot of hazing came off. It must have been something that hit the door and hardened like a rock.
I love the clay, I use it before wax everytime and now I only polish about once a year. Remember each time you polish, you remove a small layer of the paint. |

hello haasman
i am almost positive short of betting my life that the 87 factory paints were clear coated. i've got an 87 420 and it has it and my 88 also. now my 72 350sl has an enamel paint only. regarding clay i just did the 72 with clay and all i can say is WOW!!!!!!! sooo easy and did it make the surface smooth as glass but....... it did nothing for the lite cloudiness. but that is in the red paint. the 72 sat out for 2 chicago winters and was plenty oxidized. the paint when i got it had been beautifully detailed but being outside almost ruined the paint. but it will soon be ok now about your cloudiness. likely in the clear coat. i leased a new 89 lincoln t/c dark grey. never waxed it or cared for it at about 5 years the hood looked cloudy the next thing i know wham the clear coat is peeling. the only cure for that was to sand out and re-apply the clear coat. i am sure there are varying degrees which you might get the cloudiness out but the clear coat can't be over 2 or 3 thousandth of an inch and i'm betting your thru the clear coat before the milk is gone. just my personal experience with clear coats.
