Refurbishing leather seats

I thought it would be useful to cross-post this to the Detailing Forum, from the Tech Forum.

Go to my web site - Cars - Technical - Leather seats

Enjoy!

Spectacular results.

You redyed the whole seats, not just the areas you patched, didn't you?

Did you have any issues with the dye plugging up the perforations?

I did the whole of the seat fronts.

Backs were fine and the color match so good I didn't have to repaint them. My goal was to stop the cracks before they got worse. Thus I repainted all of the front and the bolster area.

If you slop it on too thick the dye/paint will clog the perforations - take it in thin coats and poke at the clogged ones with a dry brush, though in practice they seem to clear themselves after some use, based on my experience with the rear seats which I did many years ago.

If you are really particular, I would suggest going with a diluted solution (the paint is water soluble) and doing many more thin coats.

I also redid the center arm rest - pretty tired from use.

Another notable improvement, not clear from the pictures, is that the gloss which results from years of use goes away, replaced by a semi-matt look. Much nicer.

The manufacturer stresses the importance of softening the leather before repainting, thus making it pliable and crack resistant. Use their Soffener (sic) product.

Interestingly, the product retains the textured look of the leather, except in those narrow crack areas where the filler was used. As these are naturally creased anyway, it's tough to tell.
