Body shop blues

MBZ apparently is no longer supporting dealer body shops.
MBZ dealer in San Francisco closed theirs and farms out body work to "whoever has a good reputation."(as per manager.)

Is this the end of the MBZ excellence in body work?

This is no rule of thumb or statement of fact, but in my opinion, you will usually have a better chance of getting a proper repair at an independently owned bodyshop than at a dealership. Reputation is paramount in the autobody business,,,, just ask around and you will sort them out pretty fast.

Based on what I have seen over the years, the ratio of bad paint jobs vs. good ones seems to be about 1000 : 1.
First time my M-B needs painting, I think I will seek out a shop that specializes in Show Cars, Hot Rods, etc. & screw the costs.

I have dealt with a couple of the supposed "good body shops" around here for accident repairs. I have been dissapointed both times.

Why?

Well, I always supply used parts. Both shops did not properly prepare used body pieces (sand and refinish) before paiting, even though they said they would and charged me for it. The result has been minor dings in the old paint showing through in the new. Nither shop would fix it, claiming that the flaws were almost unnoticibal ... but to me they are very noticable.

Also, no one paint matched for me when they said they would. They just used the paint code and sprayed it fresh. The result is new body pieces that are almost a different shade of white than the older pieces.

I would also recommend having a hot rod/custom shop do the work, even if it means paying more. In the end, even a good shop will often do marginal work.

yeah, but if you look in the archives, people rave about how good the MBZ body work is. they know how to straighten things and do the paint right.
so was this the exception and not the rule for MBZ dealer body
work???
