Engine Detailing... of those darn leaks!
Well, it looks good right now! Too bad it won't last
I have a leaky valve cover, and a tiny bit on the lower pan. But that is going to wait till my next oil change. Anyone got a high-miler (more than 150K) without any leaks, or does that just come with the territory....

I saw your post on the other thread (hood pad - weird huh)...
My nissan wins hands down (which now has 150K) http://www.se-r.net/car_info/clean/detail_engine.html But I was happy how well the 300SD came out after 2 tries at it (181K) I even discovered the insides of the fender well are blue!

You need a girlfriend. You have way too much time on your hands.
Oh my gosh.. your springs are gross. How could you stand to let them get that dirty ? And that lower oil pan is not looking so hot from that angle..... |

A diesel with NO oil leaks at 150,000 miles has just had a new rebuilt engine installed. I don't think I ever heard of an MB that didn't leak a small amount somewhere. Usual culprits are valve cover gasket, turbo return line, and various seals on the front of the engine, but eventually they all leak.
The vavle cover gasket will have to be replaced each time you remove the valve cover if you expect totally leak free performance (see previous threads for instructions, it must be done correctly). The oil filler cap gasket can go, too, dripping oil down the valve cover. Lower pan gasket also leaks eventually, particularly if you run over something. Clean those springs, they look awful, you might frighten someone crawling around under you car and they will sue you when the bang their head from the shock! Peter

How did you ever get it that clean. I cannot get mind that clean if I worked on it all day. Even if I get it moderately clean, I still have oil leaks at the oil filter housing mounting gasket and at the IP mounting gasket. Just do not look forward to replacing these two gaskets. I think I'll suffer with the leaks rather than try and remove the IP.
I've got other problems such as solving the pull to the left. Brian Carlton 1984 300 SD |

E-GADS!! that is clean!
I can somewhat understand how you might've got the top side that clean....but would you mind sharing how you got the underside so clean??? Pressure washer? Steam cleaner? ACME elbow grease?

Pressure Washer, simple green, engine brite
You have the get the pressure washer wand to shoot under the car. If you follow the link I posted above it gives you the basics. If you want a real good job, jack the front of the car up, take off the front wheels, and get a better angle at what you are attacking.... (though I didn't bother this time around on the 300SD)
Most important though - this is a Texas car, so the foundation is obviously rust free!

My gosh, man. Even your FUEL is cleaner than other diesel fuel (look at the prefilter in the picture).

I still have to many leaks, the only that really bothers me is my head gasket oil leak. Just a very minute amount of oil, but enough to make a little puddle on the ground. I pressure washed my motor all off that day and it was unbelievable the amount of crap left on the ground afterwards. I didn't do as intricit job as bodyart27 did, but the idea of not having diesel soot or dirty oil on my hands anytime I touched something didn't sound all bad. How bad is a drain pan gasket swap? Seems like last time I looked there are no tricks needed.
