Duct tape residue stuck to paint!
After I was rear ended I decided put red plastic over the taillight hole so something red was there. I used duct tape to hold the plastic to the car and after taking it off it left a rim of residue around the taillight area. Because of this LA weather the gunk from the tape is baked on. In order to remove it I was thinking of paint thinner but that might ruin the paint. Anyone know of any remover that would work and not ruin the paint?

You can try WD-40. It may not work all that well, but it will not hurt the paint. Just try soaking the residue, let it dwell for a few minutes, and then rub off.

I use a product called Goo-Gone. It should be at your local home center - works like a charm.

zippo lighter fluid.

I've removed adhesive using a Clay Bar. It was actually the adhesive left behind when I replaced my rear badging. Good luck.
If all else fails you can always ask Mike at the Meguiars GTG, I'm sure he'd have something up his sleeve. |
Nail polish remover.

Thanks for the replies. I guess that several things will work, but since I have Goo Gone I will use that.

I would recommend a rotary tool with a pin stripe removing attachment. This tool is a disc of rubber similiar to a pencil eraser. Spin it up to 3000Rpm and gently run it over the adhesive. It scrapes it right off without scratching the paint. It is truly amazing.
I took 10yr old pin stripes of an expensive Jaguar with this tool in 20 minutes. Goo gone was taking me about an hour per foot of stripe. Get it at an automotive paint supply store. |
When I go to the Meguiar's GTG I will get all the car care shiet.

I used Goo Gone and it worked fine, just that it left some smearing that hopefully a car wash will get off.
