im not sure what the difference is, but:

most shops i know that "prep" cars for sale use a product that they refer to as a "dye" rather than a paint.

the finished result is no less than amazing on faded dark colors.

James,
I second that. SEM products are incredible. I totally redid the bulk heads and engine seat covers in my 45 ft power boat with incredible results. they used to be right here in Calif. until the bureaucrats ran them off. You can't find a better product, so I'll have to agree with what's his face that didn't give a name.

Try here

The SEM stuff is great and these guys will do custom colors,,,,as I am sure other's will.

Key is to use the SEM prep and apply many very light coats.

We have a technician who comes to the shop from time to time to repair seats and dashboards. As a matter of fact he's coming today to repair holes in the center console on my 400E. What he does is amazing, as he fixed the drivers seat on the same car 8 years ago and it's still holding up. The charge is usually around 35 to 40 bucks for a flawless job, so I have no need to ever try to do it myself. Most body shops or dealers anywhere should know of such a person.

JCD,
You made a good point that I forgot. Follow directions carefully and spend time on the prep work. I disagree on the thin coats. Since the vinyl covered such a large area, I opted for a quart can and brush method. At first I was very careful in the application. As I got used to the product I realized that you could probably put it on with a stick, because it flows out so beautifully.
