Grit on wipers has ruined windscreen.
My '93 SL500 was first owned in Japan and was there for the first 7 years of its life. When I bought it, I noticed the wipers had marked the screen - it looks as if the whole blade has been 'sandpapering' the glass mildly.
It's not that noticeable until you get up close outside, and hard to see while inside, but it's there. I spotted another ex-Japan SL500 in the shop the other day with the same problem. But the two other SL's there were ex-Germany and didn't have it. Could it be that Japan has an acid rain problem, or something in the air that causes this? (I don't care what it is of course, as long as I can diminish the effect). Any suggestions on how I can fix it? It passes the Certificate of Fitness so it is not a warrantable issue and I can't have it replaced under insurance. I've bought some Autoglym for glass which is meant to be good under a polisher, but I don't have the nerve to try it... heard bad things about the softness of Mercedes glass and don't want to make it any worse.
