Why do people debadge their cars?

I was thinking of taking the 190 plate off my car? Is this a good or bad idea in your opinion and also what is the best way to do this?

I don't know why people do it, but the best way to remove it is dental floss.

Thanks. I figured you needed some heat for the glue. I might do it because I dont like the 190 badge.

Early model W201's used mounting pins and glue on the trunk badges. The later models were just glued.

What color is your paint, and what condition? Think about this before you pull the badge off. You may still have 190 written on your trunk after the badge is off. Look in the trunklid to see if its mounted with glue or glue AND bolts.

I would leave it alone.

i think debadging gives a very clean look.
europeans have been debadging for a long time.

i've debadged the benz and totally debadged my '02 explorer. i even talked my little brother into it on his c208

go for it! BUT, make sure it's only glued.

welcome to m.b.shop

I debadged mine because it was such a pain to clean, especially inside the "0" and the "8". All my previous cars were debadged.

Now all I need to do is occasionally remove the three-point star to polish underneath. White especially straeks badly especially after standing in a downpour (and it rains buckets here especially during the monsoon season).

Thanks for all the great replies and welcomes. My paint seems to be in great condition. Its a 1993 but could pass for a 2001. Not a single dent, ding or paint chip. I will see if its glued but still if its glued dont I have to use some heat to melt the glue a bit so I dont damage the paint? I like the 2.6 badge but I hate the 190 badge. Maybe I will replace the 190 badge with something else one day.

If it is a 1993 (last year) 190 is it safe to assume its glue only?

Yup, by 1993 the trunk emblems were only glued on, although I think the tri-star was pin mounted.

Thanks a bunch. I was planing on only taking the 190 off. Any ideas on the best and safest way to debadge w/o hurting the paint?

Use a hair dryer to soften the adhesive, then work a length of dental floss or fishing line underneath to pull the letters away from the paint. Clean off the glue with a squirt of WD-40, wash and wax....

I had no idea. These guys here locally are always throwing their own badges on cars.
