A word of caution though, most headliner adhesives do not react well to cleaners thus, a droopy headliner. I agree with the previous advices, vinyl or plastic headliners, on the other hand, can be cleaned using a soft-bristled brush with the help of a multi-purpose cleaner, scrub a small area and wipe it dry with a clean utility towel.

I'll pitch in my vote:

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, just dampen it and gently scrub.

The headliner in my SEC is a velour-type material, not the vinyl stuff I have in the wagon. What would you suggest for cleaning this velour material? Mine appears to have a few marks which look like they could be grease or something.

I have the blue interior with an almost white vinyl headliner in my 84 300 SD. After replacing the C-pillar covers, seats, console, front door panels and dash I noticed the stains on the headliner. Over the years diesel along with the previous owner's smoking had darkened the headliner significantly.

After sleeping on the problem I covered the seats with bed sheets and used gojo on the headliner. After rubbing a section of the headliner with gojo I used a damp cloth to remove the stain and the gojo. It was the white smooth gojo not the kind with grit. I had no problem telling where I'd been.

After two years it seems to have had no adverse effects on the material, color or sheen of the headliner.

I didn't read the thread because...

I used GOJO's white paste to clean the off-white headliner in a 1984 300 SD and it worked well without complication. I covered the seats with an old bed sheet just in case some dropped. Just rub it on and rub it in a bit then rub it with a clean dry cloth. The final stage is rinsing it by wiping with a damp cloth. Keep a clean side to the vinyl.

Diesel exhaust is usually stubborn to remove.
