Those are some great reflection shots on Silver! I've yet to try NXT on Silver but by the looks of the last two pictures it does a great job.

Nice!

plink49,

Beautiful finish! Did you use a buffer? Is that the original paint? If not, how old? What do you use on the black trim?

Thanks,

ddb

Thanks ddb....the only buffer I used was my sholder and elbow! Yes, it's the original paint...not to shabby for 18 years old. I used the same steps on the black trim as on the paint...it works great. But, be careful not to get the NXT on any rubber parts!!

What steps did you use? and what did it do to rubber?

rdanz.....step #1 was: Buy stock in Meguiar's...just kidding. Seriously, I did a wash with Meguiar's Deep Crystal car wash, then went over the car with Meguiar's ScratchX (to eliminate all of the minute squirl marks and oxidation, if any), then polished with Meguiar's Deep Crystal Polish, then finished off with a coat of Meguiar's NTX Tech Wax. Let it be known that this is a LOT of work and you would be well-advised to do it over a two day period if doing it all by hand. I used the same processes on the grey body mouldings and they came out as nice as the paint. On the bottle of NXT wax it states in BOLD PRINT "Do not apply to rubber, vinyl or cloth surfaces!" I'm not exactly sure what prompted them to be so adament about it, but I do know that even an extremely light brush up against rubber trim turns your applicator black! There is apparantly a chemical reaction of some sort. Whatever the case, that process worked so well for me that I'm going to go through it two more times....then three more times in the fall.

plink, the old 300 is looking pretty good!

its funny, you dont see that color frequently, and often when you do, they look like crap. but, when its good, i think its very attractive, especially with a tan interior.

good to see that you are keeping the faith. i had a 87-300, and wish i still had it, but alas, it was hit and totaled.

PS- dont be getting high sniffing that key-lime NXT! :p

Plink that is absolutely amazing, never seen 18 year old original paint look that good! Love seeing W124's that look better than the current crop of cars.

I ordered a new E46 BMW Coupe (white) in January 2000 and was terribly disappointed with the paint. It was really soft. The 10 year old paint on my 1994 E320 has held up extremely well. I know this has a lot to do with making the newer paints more environmentally friendly. I'm often amazed at some of the older MB's with great looking original paint.

On the original window sticker the paint is referred to as "Teal Metallic" and was part of an option with the cream leather interior. The car has been in New Mexico from the day it was sold so there isn't one gram of rust anywhere on it. It was always garaged and well cared-for by PO so the intense sun didn't destroy the paint....and I'm just carrying on the tradition!

BTW....before moving to NM I lived in Lawrenceville, GA and worked in Buckhead. Small world.

I had the 300E and C230 professionally done by Brian and his assistant at Auto Express in the LA area (I don't have a rotary, the finish had been neglected for a year with several trips to car washes, etc.) Brian used NXT for the final step, and here is how they turned out with a Canon 3.2 Mpxl set on full auto:

300E

C230

C230 hood

Rear angle

C wheels reflected on E side panel in garage

Overhead light on E hood, no flash. Note that even the mounting screws for the ceiling lights and the 'popcorn' ceiling spray show up in the reflection! The black trapezoid is one of the windshield washers, for comparison.

Also, I really have to commend Brian's assistant. About 6 months ago my 90 year old mother lost her wedding ring - she has Alzheimers, and had no idea where it was. Brian's assistant (Mark) found the ring while he was doing the interior. We hadn't mentioned anything was missing or given him any instructions to look for lost objects - we had long since written off the ring as gone forever. Nobody was watching him as he worked, yet he came over to where I was watching Brian do his magic, (he is a real artist!) and placed the missing ring in my hand! Thank you, Mark, for being honest as well as skilled!!!

I had the NXT in my hand...

but I put it back down and went with what I am familiar with - Meguiars Gold Class. Maybe I should give it a try.

Here's what my results were with the GC.

Now that the weather here on the East Coast finally permits waxing I tried NXT I gave Meguiars a call to see what I should apply first before using NXT, after a few questions about my car they said just wash it first and apply. Boy was I impressed with the ease in which it went on and even more so in how easy it came off. The shine was as good if not better than the Gold Class which is what I used before but what impressed me the most was the ease of use. Now to see how long it will last.

PS I also tried Meguiars Wash Strips, they don't make as much suds as Dupont #7 Car Wash.which I have used for years, but clean very well especially removing road tar and bugs as I just got back from a 3000 mile trip.

Can't wait to try this on my classic vette.

I'm sold on NXT

JCE- you are KILLING me dude!

your 300 was one of the 1st cars i saw here on the forum, and i also had one that was silver/burgandy (an 87). i wanted badly to get mine looking as good as yours. but then on 7/3/02 i was hit and the 300 went to the boneyard.

i could not find another acceptable 300, as i wanted only up to 89 (without the lower body cladding) that was in great condition, and after great soul searching about what my actual needs were, now have a W202 in the garage.

now dont get me wrong, the C-280 IS a good car, and i now find that the size is REALLY perfect for my needs,

BUT, seeing your pic of the two side by side in the rear shot, i realize just how much i really like the W124, and wonder if another one might find its way to my house at some future time?
