Dashboard cracks

I did a search in this forum on the subject and nothing really good showed. My '86 300E has 6 cracks on the dashboard (none longer than 3" or wider than 1/8" max). What is the very best product for a DIY repair that will come out looking like it wasn't done by an 8 year old with a black crayon? This is a car I am trying to maintain in (nearly) pristine condition. Living in the US Southwest takes a toll via sun intensity....what holds up? On a similar note, what is the best UV protectorant to apply to keep an uncracked dash for cracking in the first place?

Not sure how to address the cracks that have already occurred but I can help with the protectant.

Some good protectants which have UV protection in their formula listed from very good to good:

1. 303 Aerospace (matte finish)
2. MB Interior Vinyl Care (my favorite) satin finish
3. Meguiars NXT Protectant (low gloss)
4. Meguiars Natural Shine (medium gloss)

These are the products I'm familiar with, I'm sure there are others as good so don't discount them without researching them first.

Avoid the oily and very shiny protectants since most have a certain type of silicone that car hurt your vinyl.

If you use any good product every 6 - 8 weeks (more frequently in sunbelts states) you shouldn't have any future problems.

You might check around locally and see if anyone operates a repair service for this type of problem. We have a fellow here that can apply the right filler, texture the patched areas to blend in, and re-paint as required. I haven't used his service, but plan to soon for a minor tear in the door panel.

I've used a 'dashcap' on both my '76 450SE and my current '85 380SE. These can be had in matching original color too. They aren't a 100% perfect fit though, even if trimmed carefully. They bond best with silicone. I think they hold up better than the original because they are thicker and can expand/contract more freely, not being completely bonded to the foam underneath the OEM vinyl.

There are many vendors for dash caps - I am very please with this company's product. It's hard to make something that is broken (cracked) look as good as new.

CLICK

Hey did I mention they are in Texas!
