How do you keep new rims, new?

I'll be getting my new rims from TireRack a week from Wed, I can't wait there going to look so nice! But my question is what is the best way to protect the finish on them? There painted I guess? I was thinking about waxing them, then just washing them when the look dirty. Any advice or tips? I won't be useing them in the snow.

Regular wiping with a soft cloth to keep brake dust and other dirt from building up, then just wash and wax like you would any other painted surface. I've heard of people spraying a light oil, like WD-40 or even vegatable oil sprays, like PAM, to make it easier to clean the wheels, but it would seem that the oil would just attract more dirt.

I would wash them first, brake dust is pretty abrasive in my opinion (remember it's designed to have a high friction factor)

I wax my wheels, reaching through the rims..

If they're not to dirty then you can wipe them down with a soft cloth and quick detailing spray.

If they're dirty I would wash them, car wash soap is perfect.

If they're extremely dirty a wheel cleaner like Eagle One A2Z or Meguiars Hot Rims will ease cleanup.

Wax them with a synthetic wax every two to three months depending on use.

Clay once a year.

my C240 has new rims and when I wash it and put tire shine spray on the tires some of it gets on the rim but I wipe them and they shine even more. Is it ok that the tire shine goes on the rims even when i wipe it off? I never saw it do any harm before.

Thanks, thats what I thought you were supposed to do, I'll treat them like the paint on my car.

What kind of tire shine are you using? I would check the back of the product to make sure it is safe on painted, clearcoated or whatever surface you have. I would imagine it is safe but you can never be too safe. You may also consider using a quick detailer to wipe down the wheel after using the tire spray.

Soap specifically for washing cars - meaning no dishawasing detergent, which removes wax and can damage painted finishes. I use Zymol or Meguiars car wash soaps myself.
