clay bar or white rubbing compond, which

having used white rubbing compond for years, recently i have heard of clay bar
does clay bar replace rubbing compound(i use compond with a wet rag to thin it out)? is a light coat of wet compoud bad for my 88 124,white or my black 88 201?
guess i am a little behind the times
does clay bar also take off paint?
thanks
rich

Claying and rubbing compound are two different detailing procedures. Claying lifts imbedded impurities on the paint's surface into the clay, without harming the paint. It should be done after washing and before polishing.

Rubbing compounds are essentially "abrasive" and designed to "remove" paint material, hopefully limited to oxidized parts of the paint surface.

My car blows smoke and the rear tends to get dark and slightly oily. I've been using Turle wax rubbing compund on this, and on other marks (sap etc) and it seems to work well. However, in the rear, the clear coat is peeling, so I want to help that last as long as possible. Is the rubbing compund going to cause it to peel faster? What else can I use to remove the oily stuff that doesn't come off easily with car wash? THe paint seems smooth, so I don't know if the clay would be appropriate.

rubbing compound is very abrasive... it should make quick work of your clear coat.... then the paint will go even quicker...

you should be using a cleaner wax at most.

If you have oily deposits, a cleaner wax that is chemical cleaning, not abrasive would be best.

Wax your car, then the tree sap will come off more easily. If you are using rubbing compound all the time, it is pretty much a mistake.

how about all them swrill marks ? From years of car washes.

I bought this black Mercedes used. I dont run my cars thru car washes but previous owner did.
wax. polish, and clear coat polish wont get all the swrills out.

I am primarly concerned about the hood appearance.

Thanks

To remove swirl marks you will likely need to use a rotary buffer, which should only be used in the hands of a professional. It is easy for someone not accustomed with a rotary buffer to burn through the paint.

I would recommend finding an experience detailer to do this job for you.
