Even with improvements.....
My 0-60 times look terrible compared to what some have said they should be....
18.61 seconds to go from flat zero to 60 with no brake torque. Seems to be about 6 seconds long. I can feel the turbo kick in, but it doesn't put me in the seat the way others have. Think I'm going to do the Diesel Purge and try again. Any other suggestions? 84 300SD, 251,000

Where do you buy your fuel? Some boondock stations sell crummy diesel fuel. 10-15 miles to nearest truck stop can be worthwhile.
How are the valve clearances? And you've got to figure an engine with 250k miles doesnt have the compression it used to. |

Most recent fuel purchases are from the brand spankin new Randalls Food Mart....where it's priced at 1.61 per gallon and had a 6 cents per gallon discount for using the Randalls card.
Figured I was getting a great deal and some decent fuel. The best performance I ever get is on Loves diesel (and their Premium in the Grand National....Can't understand why that is, but it is....) I haven't yet had the opportunity to do the Valves, it's one of the next projects I'm going to tackle, as soon as I purchase all of the support items.

Valve clearance, timing chain stretch check, clean the lines from the intake manifold to ALDA, check total boost from turbo.
You are definitely short of power, and if smoke free at full throttle, not getting enough boost or enough fuel. Peter

Agree
Valve clearance, clean the line from intake manifold to ALDA.
Check for cracked or broken vacuum lines.......

Fuzzball,
I swear, every tank of fuel I purchase seems to give me different performance. Some good, some bad, some smoky, some not. However, if that car has lots of miles on it, you might pull the injectors and take them to Central Texas Diesel Injection Service (on E. 4th somewhere) for a pop test. Take your VISA or a wad of cash too because the pop test is free but when you see that three of the five injectors are squirting fuel in a stream instead of 'poofing' you'll want to get them rebuilt at $70/ea Once you get those rebuilt injectors installed (with new heat shields) go back an revisit your ALDA adjustment (AKA a "smoke control" on the Cummins application of the Bosch IP). The lovely and charming Marlene has been through this drill and now runs out as well as her stablemate, Lilly. Forumites will remember that ever since I bought Lilly, I've complained that these two cars performed very differently. Apparently, the PO complained to his shop that Marlene was making too much smoke so they must have turned the ALDA screw clockwise to reduce the smoke (and off-idle perfomance) instead of repairing the problem correctly with an injector rebuild. At approximately 1/2 turn CCW on the ALDA, I was getting excellent off-idle performance and what appears to be slightly less turbo lag to boot! The only thing that makes me mad is that it took me a year to figure all this out. The combination of new injectors and the manual tranny makes her a real pleasure to drive these days plus I'm pulling about 23mpg in town and 26+ on the highway.
