HELP! Engine won't stop running
My father just purchased a very nice 84 300D Turbodiesel. The transmission shifts are terrible, so this morning I was fiddling with what I thought was the bowdon cable (thats the shorter one right?) and now the engine will run after I remove the key until I manually turn it off with the "stop" button. Does anyone know what I did, and how I can fix it. This is the first diesel in the family and i ts very different from the gaser's we own!

you probably bumped the vaccum line that comes throug the firewall and goes into a little rubber 'L' coming out below that manual shut-off switch. Look for a little thin coffee-straw looking thing that is not connected to anything, then look for a hole where it should probably be...
My guess would be the one I mentioned above- it goes into a hole in the firewall just beside the oil filter housing and grouped in with a bunch of other wires/vac lines... yes, it is very different from gassers. dig in to the diesel discussion searches and learn more than you could possibly imagine! good luck! The problem is, I did this extinsively earlier today. All the hoses are were they are supposed to be. I've ravaged through the archives. Now what? Imma go check one more time while I have daylight. Another question; is the modulator ON the transmission? WIll I have to put the car on ramps to access it? I took a quick peak under the car today, and theres a lot of bracing, and sound insulation under there. any suggestions? Thank You

There is a brown vacuum line that runs to and from the key switch to the rear of the fuel injection pump. It is unplugged. Look between the oil filter and injection pump. Vacuum also makes the trans shift easy or smooth at less than pedal on the floor.

Chances are you broke a vac line, but just exactly what were you adjusting?
It's possible you have the "idle" set so high from adjusting the cruise control cable that it won't shut off, but that's not really likely. It also may just be coincidence that the vac shutoff servo failed at the same time. HARD shifts indicate lack of vaccum to me, it's possible also that the main vac line is bad or you have a bad vaccum pump. Peter

even if none of the vac lines are unplugged, they could be cracked and leaking. was the transmission shifting hard even before you adjusted the bowden cable? did the car take a couple seconds to shut down even before? if those are true, you probably had vac leaks all along, but it just went over the edge when you might have been pushing on the vac lines when you were under the hood.
if the trans was fine before, and it also shut down quickly before, you might have just pulled a line out or parted one in the middle. if you dont have some kind of vacuum gauge yet, get one, youll use it all the time.
