Being an 86, it's probably a turbo diesel. That would be a bit rare as they only sold it for a couple years. A lot of these trucks were bought up by exporters and shipped to Central America, so not many survive. I have an 86 TD pickup. These are great little trucks and great little engines. Mine still runs beautifully. The drawback is that parts are getting scarce, for example, the clutch cable for mine is NLA. Around here, the local dealer does his best to help me with parts. A lot of dealers can't be bothered with parts for old ones though. If it's a NA diesel, you may be able to dig up a junkyard engine. If it's a turbo, don't even bother looking for one. If you need anything looked up or copied, I have the factory service manual (for the pickup model). If you get one, remember, it has a timing belt which drives the water pump, so replace those 2 items before you do anything else.

I think a 617 would be too tall and too heavy.

there are other conversions

Folks,

I had an 86 (gas) Trooper for many years. There are (or at least were) conversion kits to install GM 2.8 V6's and other engines. I don't know how the diesel trans would adapt. Seems to me it was a company in Colorado that sold adapter plates between the engine and trans ( mine was a manual).

I just sold a non-turbo version complete to a yard in FL for about $450. That was a little cheap, but not much. It was however the only running one I had. There kinda scarce. Tranny's look pricy.
